Anthropic reported that Chinese AI company Alibaba conducted a large-scale "distillation attack" by using 25,000 fraudulent accounts to perform 28.8 million prompt-response exchanges with Anthropic's Claude AI over three months. This operation extracted about 57.6 billion tokens of valuable digital knowledge, including advanced AI reasoning and software engineering capabilities, effectively stealing intellectual property to train Alibaba's own AI model. Anthropic has urged the U.S. Congress to enact measures like information sharing, export controls, and penalties to prevent such industrial-scale AI knowledge theft by foreign entities. This incident highlights growing concerns about AI espionage and the need for stronger defenses and international cooperation.
