Japan boosts solid-state battery tech with $660M government subsidies to lead global market by 2030

Japan's government has significantly increased support for next-generation solid-state battery (ASSB) technology, approving $660 million in subsidies for five major projects as of early 2026. This push aims to secure a stable supply chain and advance commercialization by 2030, with major automakers like Toyota and Honda already building pilot production lines. Despite strong competition from China and others in low-cost lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries, Japan remains a global leader in ASSB patents and is focusing on improving battery yield, quality, and cost reduction. The government allocates about 18% of subsidies to developing key materials like solid electrolytes and lithium sulfide, essential for scaling production and maintaining industrial competitiveness.
