The upcoming merger of Paramount Skydance and Warner Bros. will create a studio with strong franchises but a weak animation lineup compared to Disney and Universal. Over the past decade, both Paramount and Warner Bros. released only eight animated films each, far fewer than Disney's 21 and Universal's 23, resulting in significantly lower box office revenue. As family-friendly PG-rated animated films have recently dominated the box office, the combined studio needs to develop a robust slate of animated movies to compete effectively. Leveraging existing IP like SpongeBob and DC superheroes, the new entity aims to expand and create new animated properties to capture a larger share of the lucrative family film market.
