New Jersey American Water will resume using chloramines at its Raritan-Millstone and Canal Road Water Treatment Plants starting the week of April 20, following a temporary switch to chlorine during routine maintenance that began in mid-February. This change affects customers in several counties including Essex, Hunterdon, Mercer, Middlesex, Morris, Somerset, and Union. Chloramines have been used since the 1970s and meet all EPA and NJDEP drinking water standards. Customers may notice a reduction in chlorine taste and smell as chloramine treatment resumes.
