A report by Global Witness reveals that conflict minerals, specifically coltan from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, have infiltrated the supply chains of major tech companies including NVIDIA and Microsoft. Coltan, essential for electronics capacitors, is linked to violence and exploitation in Congo's North Kivu region, controlled by the M23 rebel group. Despite certification efforts, smuggling and mixing with legitimate sources continue, undermining ethical sourcing. The report calls for suspending Rwandan coltan imports and stronger corporate accountability to prevent funding armed conflict.
