Rising US-Iran tensions and President Trump's threat to impose a 20% fee on cargo passing through the Strait of Hormuz have pushed Gulf states like Saudi Arabia and the UAE to speed up development of alternative oil export routes. Saudi Arabia is diverting millions of barrels daily through its East-West pipeline to the Red Sea port of Yanbu, while the UAE plans to build a new port and terminal in Fujairah outside the strait to reduce reliance on the vulnerable Hormuz route. Although these alternatives help mitigate risks, they shift geopolitical exposure to other maritime chokepoints like the Bab el-Mandeb Strait. Full replacement of Hormuz remains challenging as many Gulf exporters still depend heavily on it, and building sufficient infrastructure could take 18-24 months.
