The U.S. Department of Energy's National Nuclear Security Administration chose Amentum to negotiate a lease for a 1-gigawatt AI data center paired with 2 gigawatts of on-site power generation at the Savannah River Site. The project will initially use natural gas as a bridge to advanced nuclear energy, addressing the timing gap between data center demand and nuclear reactor deployment. This initiative is part of a broader DOE effort to develop AI and energy infrastructure on federal land, aiming to increase grid power without burdening existing customers. The project is still in early stages, pending negotiations, permits, and approvals, with no nuclear technology vendor yet disclosed.
