GM announced a partnership with startup Peak Energy to develop sodium-ion batteries tailored for grid-scale energy storage, aiming to start trial production in 2028. Sodium-ion batteries offer cost, safety, and longevity advantages over lithium-ion but require larger size. Meanwhile, GM will supply lithium iron phosphate cells to LG Energy Solution for current energy storage needs and expand collaboration with Redwood Materials for battery recycling and second-life battery use. This strategy supports GM's push into energy storage markets and factory energy cost savings.
