Ford Motor Company has launched Ford Energy, a new subsidiary focused on manufacturing and selling US-assembled battery energy storage systems for utilities, large industrial customers, and data centers. The company aims to deploy at least 20GWh of storage capacity annually, with first deliveries planned for late 2027, repurposing its Kentucky battery plant for grid-scale storage production. Ford's flagship product, the DC Block, uses lithium iron phosphate cells designed for long service life and thermal stability, targeting the growing market driven by utility-scale storage needs and data center energy demand. While competition is strong, Ford leverages domestic manufacturing and tax incentives to carve a niche in a rapidly expanding market projected to exceed 600GWh by 2030.
