Duke Energy is seeking approval to recover approximately $809 million in fuel and purchased power costs from an extreme cold snap in early 2026 that pushed electricity demand to record highs in the Carolinas. To meet the surge, Duke bought additional power at high market prices, which will increase typical residential bills by about $6.90 to $7.88 monthly starting June 1. The utility emphasizes the need for new power plants and grid upgrades to ensure reliability as North Carolina's population and energy demand grow. Duke plans to add nearly 20,000 megawatts of new generation capacity over the next decade to reduce reliance on purchased power during extreme weather.
