A critical bug in Litecoin's Mimblewimble Extension Block (MWEB) allowed an attacker to fake a pegout of 85,034 LTC in March 2026, but the attacker returned the funds minus an 850 LTC bounty. In April, a related exploit caused a 13-block chain reorganization, resulting in losses for NEAR Intents and Thorchain due to transactions processed on the invalid chain. Litecoin developers patched the bug and mining node issues in Litecoin Core v0.21.5.4 and coordinated closely with mining pools to contain the damage. Users are advised to upgrade their nodes to ensure network stability. The incident highlighted gaps in validation and response coordination but ultimately no user funds were lost in the March exploit.
