Bitcoin Core developers have proposed removing the decade-old opt-in Replace-by-Fee (RBF) signaling from Bitcoin wallets, as it became redundant after full RBF was enabled by default in Bitcoin Core 28.0 in October 2024. The opt-in signaling, which allowed users to mark transactions as replaceable, now serves mainly as a privacy risk by creating identifiable transaction fingerprints. About 75% of transactions already use a common signaling standard, but the remaining 25% still expose users to tracking by chain analysis firms. The proposal aims to standardize wallet behavior and reduce privacy risks without changing how RBF works at the protocol level. The main risk is fragmentation if some wallets do not adopt the change, potentially worsening fingerprinting for some users.
