The iShares MSCI Emerging Markets ETF (EEM) charges a 0.69% annual fee, significantly higher than the 0.09% fee of its similar counterpart, the iShares Core MSCI Emerging Markets ETF (IEMG). Both funds offer nearly identical exposure to emerging markets, heavily concentrated in Asian tech stocks, but IEMG has outperformed EEM over the past decade due to its lower fees. Investors holding EEM may be paying a premium for liquidity benefits aimed at institutions, without receiving additional diversification or returns. Switching to IEMG, especially in tax-advantaged accounts, could save investors substantial costs over time.
