The attacker fed a fake low Bitcoin price into the oracle, allowing them to liquidate bitcoin-backed vaults prematurely and steal about $912,000 from 42DAO, the protocol's governance entity. This exploit highlights the risks of relying on unprotected price oracles in DeFi systems, causing Balance Coin's value to plummet from near $1 to under $0.0014. The incident erases nearly all of the token's $3.5 million market value, leaving holders with a nearly worthless stablecoin.
