A new study published in Nature Communications reveals that nearly 70% of Klebsiella pneumoniae bacteria, which cause common infections like UTIs and pneumonia, are resistant to the three most used oral antibiotics in the U.S. This multidrug-resistant strain is spreading widely in communities, especially affecting elderly women, and limits treatment options to injectable antibiotics. The research highlights an urgent need for new treatments and ongoing surveillance to control this growing public health threat. The study analyzed over 2,000 samples from 42 states, showing widespread community transmission beyond hospitals.
