The US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) will start creating new safety rules for automakers to ensure drivers and passengers can safely exit vehicles. This move follows incidents, including fatal ones, where people were trapped inside cars with flush, electronic door handles like those on Tesla models. The agency decided rulemaking is better than a defect investigation after a petition about Tesla's 2022 Model 3 door release design. If adopted, these rules will apply to all automakers. Tesla and Rivian are already working on redesigns to improve manual door releases for better safety.
