Arm Holdings, the UK chip designer known for licensing its designs, has launched its first in-house processor, the AGI CPU, aimed at AI workloads in data centers. Meta is the first customer, with seven others including OpenAI and Cloudflare also committed. The chip is built on TSMC's 3-nanometre process, offering double the performance-per-watt compared to Intel and AMD's x86 chips, and supports up to 64 units per air-cooled rack for energy-efficient data centers. This marks a major strategic shift for Arm after 35 years of licensing rather than manufacturing silicon, developed over 18 months in a $71 million lab in Texas.
