American Airlines, along with Delta, Southwest, Alaska Air, JetBlue, and United, have increased fees for checked bags to offset rising jet fuel costs. American Airlines raised its first checked bag fee by $10 to $50 and its second bag fee to $60, with additional charges for third bags. Other airlines followed with similar hikes, reflecting the surge in jet fuel prices from around $85-$90 per barrel to about $209 due to geopolitical tensions. These fee increases affect domestic and short-haul international flights and include discounts for prepayment and benefits for loyalty members and military personnel.
