Amazon has requested federal approval to launch up to 5,105 satellites to build a direct-to-device (D2D) internet network, aiming to provide connectivity directly to smartphones and other devices without relying on traditional cell towers. This network will partly use assets from Globalstar, a satellite operator Amazon plans to acquire for $11.6 billion, with the deal expected to close in 2027. The D2D network targets users underserved by current wireless providers and aims to support emergency operations and remote worksites. Amazon plans to begin deploying the network in 2028, competing with SpaceX's Starlink service.
