PT Bank Negara Indonesia (Persero) Tbk (“BNI" or “Bank”) was originally established in Indonesia as the central bank under the name “Bank Negara Indonesia” based on Government Regulation in Lieu of Law No. 2 of 1946 dated 5 July 1946. After officially becoming a commercial bank on 15 September 1950, the government granted a foreign exchange license to Bank BNI to facilitate its support for national export development. This task began with the opening of a network of overseas branches. In anticipating, the banking sector deregulation which began in June 1983 and was followed by the October 1988 deregulation package, Bank BNI completely restructured its business operations so as to become more adaptable and flexible in facing increased competition and market development at the time.
